Anthony Stewart Head, the British actor who spent seven seasons guarding the Hellmouth as Watcher Rupert Giles on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, died Friday at age 72 from complications due to pneumonia. He was surrounded by his family at the time of his death, according to BBC News.
His daughters Emily Head, 37, and Daisy Head, 35, confirmed the news in a statement to the Press Association. "It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of our extraordinary father, Anthony Head," they wrote. "He passed away peacefully of complications due to pneumonia, surrounded by his family. It has been, and forever will be, an honour and a privilege to be his daughters, and to have witnessed firsthand the impact both he and his work have had on so many."
The statement continued: "We know how dearly he will be missed by friends, colleagues, and fans of the shows he was in — he loved his job very much, and he always considered himself incredibly lucky, to have been able to work alongside such exceptionally talented people, in such wonderful productions, across a career that spanned several decades."
Head trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and began his career in theater before rising to prominence in the UK through a widely recognized run of Nescafe Gold Blend commercials between 1987 and 1993. His casting as Giles alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar in Joss Whedon's Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which ran from 1997 to 2003, made him an enduring figure in television. Among the full cast, only Gellar, Alyson Hannigan, and Nicholas Brendon appeared in more episodes. Head stepped back from the regular cast during season six to spend time with his family in England, then returned as a guest star through the finale.
His career extended well beyond Sunnydale. He played the father-figure mentor in Merlin, appeared in Little Britain, and took on the role of slippery AFC Richmond owner Rupert Mannion in Ted Lasso opposite Jason Sudeikis and Hannah Waddingham, appearing across all three seasons from 2020 to 2023. He reprised Giles for the 2023 Audible audio series Slayers: A Buffyverse Story, and his final film credit was Upgraded, released in 2024.
Tributes arrived quickly from former colleagues. Brett Goldstein, who plays Roy Kent in Ted Lasso, wrote on Instagram that Head "was a brilliant actor who played the worst person in the world, which was an incredible skill because he was the best person. Infinitely charming and kind and fun and a joy." David Boreanaz, who played Angel opposite Head on Buffy, called him "a kind and generous soul," per CBS News. Little Britain co-star Matt Lucas wrote on X: "He was unfailingly brilliant, and always so kind and warm."
Head's death follows a difficult stretch for the Buffy cast. Co-star Nicholas Brendon died from natural causes in March at age 54, and Michelle Trachtenberg, who joined the series in season four, died in February 2025. Head's longtime partner Sarah Fisher, an animal welfare campaigner, died in December 2025 at age 61. Both Emily and Daisy Head, who confirmed their father's passing, are actors themselves. "Our grief is far greater than the hole he has left behind," they wrote, "but we know his legacy will live on, in the shows he was a part of, and in the audiences that love them."
