Patrick Agyemang's World Cup is over before it started. Derby County confirmed April 7 that the American striker suffered a serious Achilles tendon injury in the first half of Sunday's 2-0 Championship win over Stoke City, ruling him out of the June 11 tournament on home soil. The club said further tests are planned and that no recovery timeline is available yet.

Agyemang landed awkwardly while controlling the ball and was stretchered off the pitch visibly emotional, his right leg strapped. The injury is a significant blow to both club and country: Derby trail Wrexham by just four points in the promotion race, and Agyemang had contributed 10 goals and 3 assists across 38 Championship appearances this season after joining from Charlotte FC in the summer of 2024, also overcoming hernia surgery along the way.

For the USMNT, the loss is acute. Agyemang had established himself as one of the more dynamic attacking options available to coach Mauricio Pochettino, scoring 6 goals in 14 caps since his international debut in January 2025, including 5 goals in his first 9 appearances. As recently as March, he came off the bench to score against Belgium in a 5-2 friendly defeat and appeared against Portugal in a 2-0 loss.

Pochettino must submit his World Cup squad by May 30, leaving him roughly seven weeks to identify a replacement for a player CBS Sports reported was firmly in contention for a roster spot. Agyemang's value was tied in part to his versatility as a bench option capable of changing games, a role Pochettino had flagged as a priority heading into a tournament the United States is co-hosting with Canada and Mexico. The East Hartford, Connecticut native was born November 7, 2000, and would have been playing a World Cup in front of home crowds at 24.

Derby County said the club will provide Agyemang with the highest level of medical care during his recovery.
